In principle, the European Insurance Card (e-card) is valid in countries of the European Union. For visits to the doctor or necessary hospital stays in other European countries, the relevant forms must generally be completed. In some cases, costs for visits to the doctor or hospital stays are settled directly with the home country and institution with which the e-card is registered, and no costs are incurred. In many European countries, however, it is necessary to pay fees for doctor's visits and other medical services locally before submitting them to the health insurance fund in your home country. The costs incurred are not always covered in full. The difference in corresponding benefit rates in the various countries of the European Union may also limit the assumption of costs.
In all other cases of a stay abroad, it is strongly recommended that you take out international health insurance.
