If you want to live and work in Austria as an artist or cultural worker, you need to ask yourself two different questions:

  • What requirements do I need to fulfil to be allowed to stay in Austria?
  • Do I need a visa or a residence permit?
  • What requirements do I need to fulfil to be allowed to work in Austria?
  • Do I need a work permit? Does my residence permit include the authorisation to work?

How do you know which permits you need?

This depends on

  • which nationality you have,
  • how long you want to stay in Austria, and
  • what you want to do in Austria.

In the following sub-chapters, we explain the different options.

EU-/EEA nationals/Swiss citizens:

No entry or residence permit required; no approval or notification under the Act on the Employment of Foreign Nationals (AuslBG) for stays of more than 3 months: registration certificate required

Third-country nationals

Staying up to a maximum of 6 months
Staying for more than 6 months
  • Residence permit required for artists
  • Employment permit required under the Act on Temporary Employment and Temporary Residence for unskilled employment
  • Red-White-Red Card (entitles holder to settle in Austria):
    • Assessment according to a points system
    • Minimum wage required

Info: Artists and cultural workers who only enter Austria for a one-day performance or an artistic production lasting a maximum of 8 weeks and are employed for this purpose by an employer in Austria do not need a work permit under certain conditions. Their employers only need to report their employment. Further details can be found on the subpage ...I am coming for an artistic performance at short notice.

Info: This settlement permit is specially tailored for artists from countries outside the EEA. It is usually issued for one year. Further information can be found on the subpage Settlement Permit - Artist.
