...and I am a third-country national
A visa is usually required to enter a foreign country. Whether people of your nationality need a visa depends on the respective destination country’s regulations.
Some countries grant visa-free entry for certain nationals, which means that you can enter those countries without a visa and stay for a set period.
How long do you want to stay?
...I would like to stay for up to 3 months
If a visa is required for people of your nationality to enter the desired EU/EEA country or Switzerland and you wish to stay there for a maximum of 3 months, you will require a type C visa for tourists.
This visa entitles you to
- enter into the country for which you have applied for the visa, and
- move freely within the Schengen area, provided that no territorial restrictions have been imposed.
- This visa does not entitle you to
- gainful employment. The only exception: although you are not actively employed, you are allowed to attend events related to your profession (e.g. a business trip, individual meetings, festivals, trade fairs, workshops).
INFO: Because the type C visa generally authorises you to move freely throughout the Schengen area, it is also known as a "Schengen visa".
