A visa is usually required to enter a foreign country. Whether people of your nationality need a visa depends on the respective destination country’s regulations.

Some countries grant visa-free entry for certain nationals, which means that you can enter those countries without a visa and stay for a set period.

How long do you want to stay?

If a visa is required for people of your nationality to enter the desired EU/EEA country or Switzerland and you wish to stay there for a maximum of 3 months, you will require a type C visa for tourists

This visa entitles you to

  • enter into the country for which you have applied for the visa, and
  • move freely within the Schengen area, provided that no territorial restrictions have been imposed.
  • This visa does not entitle you to
  • gainful employment. The only exception: although you are not actively employed, you are allowed to attend events related to your profession (e.g. a business trip, individual meetings, festivals, trade fairs, workshops).

INFO: Because the type C visa generally authorises you to move freely throughout the Schengen area, it is also known as a "Schengen visa".

For longer-term stays, check the national legal system of the country you wish to enter.
