Posting between EU/EEA countries
Employers based in an EU/EEA country can also post their employees to other EU/EEA countries, for example to carry out a project there. Self-employed people can also post themselves within the EU/EEA. See the subchapter on business postings to Austria for more information.
The posting of employees between EU/EEA countries has the following special feature under social security law: you only remain covered by social security in your posting country for a posting period of up to 24 months. There are two exceptions to this rule:
- All EU/EEA member states can, if they wish, create more favourable regulations. This means that, like Austria, they can also regulate that employees can stay longer. Find out more about this in the respective national legislation.
- In Austria, a longer duration can be agreed in exceptional cases upon application to the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection.
